Benfica bring in South American pair

Argentinian left-back José Alberto Shaffer and Brazilian right-back Patrick have become SL Benfica's first signings of the summer, as the Lisbon side gear up for the UEFA Europa League play-offs.

Shaffer, 23, has arrived from Racing Club signing a deal until 2013, while 20-year-old Patrick has agreed a five-year contract, having previously played for Criciúma EC and AD São Caetano. No details of transfer fees have been released for either player. New coach Jorge Jesus will take charge of his first training session on Thursday, with the UEFA Europa League play-offs scheduled for 20 and 27 August. The club are expected to confirm another new arrival, Javier Saviola, on Tuesday.
