Grings wins adidas Golden Boot

Inka Grings won the adidas Golden Boot as UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ finals top scorer – matching her feat of four years ago in England.

Repeat feat
Grings scored four goals in the 2005 finals as Germany took the trophy and, after claiming two in the 6-2 deciding victory against England, this time she managed six, her and Birgit Prinz now matching Heidi Mohr's competition-record career tally of ten. Grings becomes the first player to finish as finals top scorer in more than one competition, ending three ahead of team-mate Fatmire Bajramaj, England duo Eniola Aluko and final goalscorer Kelly Smith, and retiring Sweden captain Victoria Sandell Svensson.

'Pure happiness'
"I like to play the European Championship!" Grings said. "I'm happy with these awards but you can't forget the team, with these team-mates you always look good. It's just a beautiful night. I just heard [about the record] a few minutes ago. Maybe I'll begin to appreciate it in two or three days but for now it is just pure happiness."

adidas congratulations
The adidas Golden Boot is the official UEFA award for the top scorer of the tournament. The trophy was handed over to Grings by tournament ambassador Satu Kunnas in a ceremony following Thursday's final at the Olympic Stadium, Helsinki.
