Völler looks to Lehmann

Arsenal FC goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has returned to the Germany squad for the friendly against Italy.

International recall
The 33-year-old, who made his competitive debut for the Premiership club in the FA Community Shield against Manchester United FC on Sunday after joining from BV Borussia Dortmund, is recalled to the 20-man squad by coach Rudi Völler, with Hamburger SV's Christian Rahn another returnee.

Notable absentees
However, Völler has to do without Lehmann's former club mates Torsten Frings and Christoph Metzelder, who are both ruled out by injury, while Liverpool FC's Dietmar Hamann and Christian Ziege of Tottenham Hotspur FC are also sidelined.

Important fixtures
Germany face two crucial UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying games early next month, travelling to Reykjavik to play Iceland on 6 September before taking on Scotland in the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund four days later. Völler's side currently lead Group 5 with eleven points from five matches, two ahead of Iceland, and three above Scotland.
