Coaching career: Blackpool FC, Norwich City FC, Leicester City FC (interim), Northern Ireland

• A tough-tackling left-back, Worthington played for five English league clubs, spending the bulk of his career with Sheffield Wednesday, from 1984 to 1994. Won the League Cup in 1991 and reached both domestic cup finals two years later.

• Played in 66 internationals for Northern Ireland, two of them at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Won his final cap in February 1997.

• Became player-manager of Blackpool in 1997/98 before hanging up his boots at the end of that season. Moved on to Norwich, initially as assistant manager to compatriot Bryan Hamilton, before taking charge in December 2000.

• Led the Canaries into the Premier League as Division One champions in 2003/04 but unable to keep them there the following season and eventually lost his job in September 2006.

• Briefly in charge of Leicester before replacing Fulham FC-bound Lawrie Sanchez as Northern Ireland's new manager midway through impressive UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying campaign in June 2007. Won record four successive games in 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers to temporarily top group.
