Dempsey news brings Fulham relief

Fulham FC's fears that Clint Dempsey's season may be over have been allayed after scans revealed that the United States winger does not require surgery on a knee injury picked up on Sunday.

Fulham FC's fears that Clint Dempsey's season may be over have been allayed after further examinations revealed that the United States winger does not require surgery.

Knee problem
Dempsey injured his right knee during Sunday's 2-0 defeat by Blackburn Rovers FC, and the initial prognosis was of a torn posterior cruciate ligament. Yet the gloom has been lifted, albeit slightly, after a scan uncovered only moderate damage. In a statement, the club added: "Early indications are positive in that no operation is required. At this stage it is thought the injury will not prevent him from featuring for Fulham prior to the end of the season."

Injury problems
The news will also please Dempsey's international coach, Bob Bradley, ahead of the summer's FIFA World Cup but the 26-year-old will miss Fulham's UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie with FC Shakhtar Donetsk next month. His absence will be keenly felt, especially with top scorer Bobby Zamora (collarbone) and defender John Pantsil (knee) nursing injuries of their own.
