UEFA Champions League: winner 2010

• Began his professional career aged 18 with Newell's Old Boys but left 12 months later to join Boca after helping Argentina to victory in the 1997 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

• Won two league titles and the 2000 Copa Libertadores with Boca and was also given his first cap for Argentina while at the Buenos Aires club.

• Joined Roma in 2000 and won the Serie A title in his first season, making 31 appearances and scoring one goal − on 18 February 2001 against US Lecce (1-0).

• Played for Argentina at the 2002 FIFA World Cup but missed the 2006 finals; left Roma for Madrid after four years and 122 Serie A matches but returned to Italy after one season in Spain, joining Inter.

• A Scudetto winner in each of his first five seasons at San Siro but playing time seriously restricted by injuries, causing him to miss the whole of Argentina's successful 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

• Won the treble with Inter in 2009/10, leaving former club Roma as runners-up in both the Coppa Italia and Serie A; returned to the Estádio Santiago Bernabéu for the UEFA Champions League final, in which Inter defeated FC Bayern München 2-0.
