Coach: Gerry Smith
Date of birth: 02/11/1955
Once assistant manager at St Patrick's Athletic FC, Athlone Town FC and Drogheda United FC, Dubliner Gerry Smith has been in charge of the Republic of Ireland's amateur side for over a decade. He also led a squad featuring future internationals Kevin Doyle, Keith Fahey and Glenn Whelan at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship.
Having beaten a combined Connacht & Ulster side to win the right to represent the nation in the UEFA Regions' Cup, Leinster & Munster feature plenty of Dublin talent as well as a seven-strong contingent of players from Munster and that region's footballing hotbeds like Cork, Waterford and Tipperary. They outstripped sides from Italy, France and San Marino to win Group 3 in Dublin without conceding a goal.
Many of the team's players were employed in the construction industry, and this may be their last tournament together, with some players expected to leave recession-hit Ireland to work overseas after the finals.
Coach Gerry Smith has high hopes for his side at the finals but he fears that the heat could be a factor. "Portugal in June will be very hot so that's something we will have to deal with but we'll prepare as best we can," he said. "We will go to Braga and give it our best shot."
