• Won two league titles and lost 1982 European Cup Winners' Cup final to FC Barcelona with Standard. Won the competition six years later having moved on to Mechelen in 1986 – still the last UEFA competition won by a Belgian club.

• Signed for Benfica in 1994 and excelled at that year's FIFA World Cup finals – his second – winning the UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year and the IFFHS Best Goalkeeper awards as a result. Retired in 1999, aged 40, after 58 caps for Belgium.

• Became Benfica's technical director but within a year had been appointed head coach at Standard. In 2002 he became the club's technical director and chairman of the Belgian Football Association's technical committee.

• In 2006 he succeeded Johan Boskamp as Standard coach and brought the club a first league title in 25 years in 2008, cementing his popularity in Liege. Unexpectedly joined Gent and success came in his second season again, Gent winning the 2010 Belgian Cup and finishing second in the league.

• Again opted to move on, replacing Steve McClaren at Dutch champions Twente, losing the league title to AFC Ajax but beating the Amsterdam club in the cup final. After a short stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Shabab, returned home with Club Brugge in 2013, winning the Belgian Cup final in 2015 and reaching another final 12 months later; lost that but considerable consolation came with the club's first league title in 11 years.
