• Started his playing career with Dinamo Zagreb but big breakthrough came in 1991 when he joined Inter Zaprešić, with whom he won the 1992 Croatian Cup; then had a two-year spell with Istra, signing for Beveren in 1995.
• Spent a year in Belgium before rejoining Dinamo, where he won four successive league titles and the domestic double in 1997 and 1998; played in three games at the 1998 FIFA World Cup as Croatia finished third and made four appearances for Dinamo in the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League group stage.
• After a spell in Italy with Torino and Sampdoria, hung up his boots in 2004 following two seasons at Slaven Koprivnica; moved into coaching the following year with Istra, quickly gaining a reputation as a rising star.
• Had a stint as assistant to Miroslav Blažević – Croatia's coach in 1998 – at Zagreb before taking over at Slaven Belupo in 2007, leading the club to second place in the first division in 2007/08; in March 2009 again returned to Dinamo, winning that season's league title.
• Also won the Croatian Cup in 2008/09 and retained the league title the following season before leaving in May 2010; after a short spell at Lokomotiva, succeeded Vahid Halilhodžić to become Dinamo coach again in 2011, starting the next season by engineering a return to the UEFA Champions League group stage. Left that December and the following summer became Igor Štimac's assistant with the national team, but made another Dinamo return as Ante Čačić's replacement in November 2012.
