• Made only one appearance in his final season as a player in Rapid's title-winning 2002/03 campaign, when he was also club's vice-president. His previous best placing was runners-up spot with Naţional in 1996/97.

• Followed father into coaching as soon as he had hung up his gloves, starting out with former club Braşov. Returned to lead Rapid to league runners-up spot and UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 2005/06.

• Won a second successive Romanian Cup in 2006/07 before quitting to return to Braşov and immediately guiding the team from Transylvania to promotion to Liga I.

• Another impressive season earned him the job of succeeding Victor Piţurcă as Romania coach in the spring of 2009 – after his father had turned it down. Began with a restorative 1-0 win away to Lithuania in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
