Sebastian Boenisch

Sebastian Boenisch

A dual citizen of Poland, where he was born, and Germany, where he grew up and has spent his entire football career to date, Sebastian Boenisch has opted to play at senior level for the former – despite being a European Under-21 champion with Germany. A tall, two-footed left-back, he returned to action in early 2012 after a 16-month absence through injury.

• Born in the Polish town of Giliwice, he emigrated with his family to the Ruhr region of Germany the following year.

• Joined FC Schalke 04 at the age of 16 and made his Bundesliga debut as a substitute in a 7-4 victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 11 February 2006; four days later he was handed a first appearance in Europe, in a UEFA Cup victory at home to RCD Espanyol.

• Left Schalke for SV Werder Bremen in 2007 but had to overcome various injury problems before establishing himself in 2008/09 as Thomas Schaaf's side played in the UEFA Champions League before going all the way to the final of the UEFA Cup; he appeared in all nine UEFA Cup matches, seven times in the starting XI, including the final against FC Shakhtar Donetsk in Istanbul.

• Started three matches, including the final, as Germany won the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Sweden but a little over a year later he opted to represent Poland at senior level and made his debut in a September 2010 friendly against Ukraine.

• Underwent surgery on his right knee shortly after his international bow and missed the rest of the 2010/11 season as well as the first half of the following campaign, returning for the reserves in January 2012.
