Marko Dević

Marko Dević

A Serbian by birth, Marko Dević obtained Ukrainian citizenship in 2008 after topping the Premier League goal charts with FC Metalist Kharkiv. A versatile attacker, he can play on the wing or through the centre. He joined FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the run-up to UEFA EURO 2012

• Born in Belgrade, he was promoted to and relegated from the Yugoslavian top flight with FK Zvezdara in his first two campaigns.

• Had one-season spells thereafter with three other Belgrade clubs – FK Zeleznik, FC Radnički Beograd and FK Voždovac – before taking flight to Ukraine and joining FC Volyn Lutsk in 2005.

• Did enough in his first term with Volyn to warrant a move to Metalist, where he made waves in his second season, 2007/08, registering 19 goals in 27 games – including eight in his last six – to top the league scoring charts.

• After obtaining Ukrainian citizenship he made his debut for the national team as a substitute in a friendly against Norway on 19 November 2008; his first start was against Serbia, his country of birth, the following February.

• Finished third in the Ukrainian Premier League five seasons running with Metalist, scoring over 50 goals during that time; his European involvement peaked in 2011/12 as Metalist reached the last eight of the UEFA Europa League, his late winner away to Olympiacos FC (his fifth goal of the competition) putting Myron Markevych's team into the quarter-finals.

• Scored his first goal for Ukraine from open play in the 91st minute of a November 2011 friendly against Austria, his one previous international strike having come from the penalty spot against Sweden nine months earlier.

• Returned from a Ukraine training camp in Turkey to sign a four-year contract with Shakhtar in the days leading up to UEFA EURO 2012.
