• 'Nico' Gaitán emerged at Boca Juniors during the 2008 Apertura championship, scoring his first goals on 31 August against CA Huracán.
• Became a popular player with the celebrated Buenos Aires club over the next 18 months, competing also in the 2009 Copa Libertadores (seven appearances).
• Called up by Diego Maradona for his international debut against Ghana (2-0) on 30 September 2009, he was not included in Argentina's 2010 FIFA World Cup squad despite a sound 2009/10 season in which he struck seven goals in 33 league games.
• Joined Benfica in May 2010 for €8.4m, taking over the No20 shirt previously worn by his Real Madrid CF-bound compatriot Ángel Di María.
• Made his UEFA Champions League debut on Matchday 1 of 2010/11 group stage in a 2-0 home win against Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC; his first goal in Europe came six months later in a UEFA Europa League draw at Paris Saint-Germain FC (1-1).
