Richard Dunne

A robust, no-nonsense central defender with 15 years of English Premier League experience, Richard Dunne was one of the chief contributors to the Republic of Ireland's successful UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying campaign. He was an unused substitute at Ireland's last major finals, the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

• Born in the Dublin satellite town of Tallaght, he crossed the Irish Sea to join Everton FC at 15 and won the FA Youth Cup before making his senior debut at 17 under manager Joe Royle.

• Made just 60 Premier League appearances in four seasons for Everton before rejoining Royle at Manchester City FC in 2000; relegated at the end of his first season, he helped the club make an immediate return to the top flight and went on to become a defensive stalwart, serving five different managers over a nine-year sojourn and accumulating 296 league appearances.

• Won his first international cap, while still at Everton, in a Dublin friendly against Greece in April 2000 and scored his first goal a few weeks later in a 2-2 draw against Mexico; went to the 2002 World Cup but played no part and made no competitive appearances for his country over a four-year stretch before re-establishing his credentials under Stephen Staunton and then Giovanni Trapattoni.

• Won his 50th cap in a 2010 World Cup qualifier and was an ever-present in that ultimately doomed campaign, scoring home and away against Bulgaria; kept his place for UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying, making ten appearances, scoring one goal and starring in a memorable 0-0 draw away to group winners Russia.

• Left Manchester City for Aston Villa FC in August 2009 and enjoyed an excellent debut season, finishing sixth in the Premier League − the highest placing of his career − and earning a runners-up medal in the League Cup; he was also voted into the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the first time.
