Sébastien Frey

Sébastien Frey has been one of the most highly rated goalkeepers in Italy for the best part of a decade. Confident, assured, sometimes spectacular, he was a member of France's UEFA EURO 2008 squad but decided to retire from international football, with just two caps, shortly after that tournament.

• Reared at AS Cannes, where he made his debut in the French top flight aged 17, he impressed scouts from FC Internazionale Milano, who brought him to San Siro in 1998.

• Made Serie A debut three days after 19th birthday – a 4-0 defeat at UC Sampdoria; spent 1999/2000 season on loan at Hellas Verona FC but back to Inter the following term where he established himself as first choice under coach Marcello Lippi and became the France Under-21 goalkeeper.

• Joined Parma FC, where he spent four productive years; club won 2002 Coppa Italia but he played no part, being preserved for Serie A and European games.

• Helped Parma avoid relegation − in play-off against Bologna FC − before moving to ACF Fiorentina, initially on loan, where he was reunited with former coach Claudio Prandelli; reached semi-finals of UEFA Cup in 2007/08 and made UEFA Champions League debut in 2008/09.

• Missed only three Serie A games for the Viola in three seasons (2006/07 to 2008/09).

Frey's grandfather, André Frey, a defender, won six international caps for France (1944-50), while his younger brother, Nicolas, plays in Serie A for AC Chievo Verona.
