Ricardo Quaresma

Ricardo Quaresma

Ricardo Quaresma and his sumptuous talent would appear to be made for the grandest stage, but the inventive winger's abundant array of tricks was seen only fleetingly at UEFA EURO 2008 and not at all at the last two FIFA World Cups. He has, however, enjoyed two uplifting seasons in Turkey with Beşiktaş JK.

• A graduate of Sporting Clube de Portugal's famed football school, he won the Portuguese domestic double in his debut season, 2001/02, aged 18, under coach László Bölöni.

• A budding talent at youth level, he was a UEFA European Under-16 Championship winner with Portugal in 2000 but missed the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and Athens Olympics through injury.

• An ill-fated move to FC Barcelona prompted a quick return to Portugal, where he featured in FC Porto's post-José Mourinho renaissance, winning another domestic double in 2005/06; added further league wins under Jesualdo Ferreira in 2006/07 and 2007/08 and played in all 30 of the club's UEFA Champions League games during a four-year stay, scoring four goals.

• Omitted from Portugal's 2006 FIFA World Cup squad, he played in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals on home soil instead; made one start and one substitute appearance (in which he scored, against the Czech Republic) at UEFA EURO 2008.

• Left Porto for FC Internazionale Milano, where Mourinho was the new coach, in September 2008 but struggled to make an impact and spent the second half of the campaign on loan to Chelsea FC, where he also failed to impress, returning to San Siro in the summer.

• Moved to Beşiktaş in June 2010 for a reported fee of €7.3m and ended his first season in the Süper Lig as a Turkish Cup winner, on penalties, having scored the opener in a 2-2 draw with İstanbul BB SK in the final.
