UEFA Champions League: runner-up 2002, winner 2010

• Born in Brasilia, Lúcio spent his early years at Porto Alegre club Internacional before joining Leverkusen midway through 2000/01.

• Runner-up in three competitions − Bundesliga, German Cup and UEFA Champions League − in 2002, though scored Leverkusen's goal in the final of the latter, which they lost 2-1 to Real Madrid CF in Glasgow.

• First capped by Brazil in 2000, and a participant at the Sydney Olympic Games, he was a permanent fixture in their 2002 World Cup triumph.

• Joined Bayern in 2004 and won a league and cup double in his first two seasons, adding a third in 2007/08; made 236 Bundesliga appearances in total, scoring 22 goals, before leaving for Milan.

• Immediately became a mainstay for Inter, starting 12 of 13 UEFA Champions League matches − including the final against Bayern − in their victorious 2009/10 campaign; also won the Scudetto and Coppa Italia in his first season with the Nerazzurri.

• A FIFA Confederations Cup winner in 2005, he captained Brazil to a successful defence of the trophy four years later, heading the winner in the final against the United States (3-2); started 14 of the Seleção's 2010 World Cup qualifiers and all five at the final tournament.

• Scored the first goal of Inter's Serie A title defence in a 2-1 home win against Udinese Calcio on 11 September 2010.
