William Kvist

William Kvist

A right-back who has been converted into a highly dependable defensive midfielder, William Kvist was the on-field architect of FC København's outstanding 2010/11 campaign, for which he was voted Danish Superligaen player of the year. Now at VfB Stuttgart, he will be a key man for Denmark at UEFA EURO 2012.

• Born in Jutland but moved to Copenhagen as a child and played both handball and football for Kjøbenhavns Boldklub before turning professional with FCK.

• Capped at various youth levels, he starred at the 2002 UEFA European Under-17 Championship on home soil, scoring three goals in four games; later graduated to senior international status, making his debut for Morten Olsen's team in August 2007 in a 4-0 home defeat by the Republic of Ireland.

• A versatile footballer, he worked his way to prominence at FCK, both as a right-back and in his preferred position of central midfield; mostly used as a substitute in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 Superligaen title triumphs, he came to the fore in the double-winning 2008/09 campaign, scoring the winning goal in the cup final against Aalborg BK.

• Ever-present in the club's 2009/10 title success and played in all 14 of the Lions' European games that season; went to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa but did not feature.

• Voted Danish footballer of the year in 2010, becoming the first FCK player to win the award and the first from a home-based club for seven years, and again in 2011; captained FCK through the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage, playing every minute as the Lions reached the last 16.
