• A product of the Milan youth academy, Borriello was sent out on loan to lower-division Triestina and Treviso before making a Serie A appearance for the Rossoneri.

• Further loan spells over the next few seasons at top-flight clubs Empoli, Reggina, Sampdoria and, for a second time, Treviso yielded little progress.

• Remained at Milan for the whole of 2006/07, making his first Serie A starts for the Rossoneri and scoring his maiden goal in a 2-2 draw at Cagliari Calcio: was given a three-month suspension part way through the campaign after traces of two corticosteroids were found in a urine sample following a match against Roma on 11 November.

• Subsequently landed co-ownership deal with Genoa, where he scored consistently all season except for the last five games, when he failed to add to his 19-goal haul and fell behind Juventus pair Alessandro Del Piero (21 goals) and David Trezeguet (20) in the top-scorers' listings.

• Returned to Milan, as an Italian international and non-playing UEFA EURO 2008 participant, but missed much of the 2008/09 campaign through injury; returned in style with a burst of goals in autumn 2009, including his first in the UEFA Champions League – in a 1-1 home draw with Olympique de Marseille.

• Competition for places at San Siro, increased by the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Robinho in summer 2010, prompted a season-long loan move to Roma, which got off to a flying start as he scored a burst of goals in Serie A and four in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
