A surprise selection for Russia at UEFA EURO 2008, Renat Yanbaev did not get on to the field of play in Austria and Switzerland, but the pacy FC Lokomotiv Moskva left-back has remained on the fringes of the national squad over the past four years thanks to some consistent displays at club level.

• Born in Krasnodar, he went to Moscow for his footballing education, spending eight years at PFC CSKA Moskva's training academy.

• Unable to break into CSKA's first team, he dropped to the second division in search of regular football, playing for FC Anzhi Makhachkala in 2003 and FC Khimki in 2005.

• Returned home to FC Kuban Krasnodar in 2006 and won promotion to the Premier-Liga, but left for Lokomotiv midway through the 2007 season and made his debut in the UEFA Cup.

• Given his international debut in a pre-UEFA EURO 2008 friendly against Serbia and started four 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures, making his competitive bow in a 2-1 defeat by Germany in Dortmund.

• Reached a century of Russian Premier League appearances for Lokomotiv early in the 2011/12 season and helped the club through to the knockout phase of the UEFA Europa League.
