An occasional England international over the past four years, Phil Jagielka started the Three Lions' first two UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers and had an outstanding game in a November 2011 friendly victory against Spain at Wembley. A confident, adaptable central defender, he has spent the past five seasons with Everton FC.
• Born in Manchester, he crossed the Pennines to begin his career with Sheffield United FC, starting out as a central midfielder and making his first-team debut at 17 in May 2000.
• Became a fixture in Blades' first XI under manager Neil Warnock and was an ever-present in the second tier in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 campaigns, the second of which brought promotion to the Premier League.
• Extended his number of consecutive league appearances for United to 133 as he played every minute for the club in the 2006/07 Premier League but relegation prompted a transfer to Everton, where he bedded in quickly, helping the Toffees finish fifth in his first two seasons and also scoring two goals in the UEFA Cup.
• Won his first senior cap for England in June 2008 as a half-time substitute in a friendly against Trinidad & Tobago but ambitions to appear in the 2010 FIFA World Cup were dashed by a cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him from April 2009 to February 2010.
• Returned to full fitness in 2010/11 and was involved in the early stages of England's UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying campaign.
