Fernando Cavenaghi

An elusive penalty-box predator, Fernando Cavenaghi was a prolific scorer in his early days at CA River Plate. After an unsuccessful spell in Russia, he rediscovered his scoring touch with FC Girondins de Bordeaux and spearheaded the team towards the French title in 2008/09.

• Made debut for River Plate at 16 and swiftly became a hero to the fans of the famous Buenos Aires club, scoring 55 goals in 88 appearances over three seasons.

• Joint-top scorer at the 2003 FIFA U-20 World Cup with four goals as Argentina reached semi-finals in the United Arab Emirates, he had to wait another five years before making his senior international debut in March 2008 v Egypt.

• Left River Plate for Russia in 2005, joining FC Spartak Moskva, but struggled, scoring just 12 league goals in 51 games.

• Acquired by Bordeaux in January 2007, his first full season yielded 22 goals in all competitions, all 15 of his league goals coming in the second half of the campaign.

• Began 2008/09 season in similar vein, scoring eleven league goals before Christmas; added just two more thereafter but still ended as club's joint top scorer in their Ligue 1 triumph.

Did you know?
Cavenaghi's 26 Ligue 1 goals for Bordeaux during the calendar year of 2008 did not include a single hat-trick.
