Maarten Stekelenburg

The successor to Edwin van der Sar as the Netherlands' No1 goalkeeper, Maarten Stekelenburg proved his credentials at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and again in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying, conceding just two goals in six matches. He won a second Dutch title with AFC Ajax before departing in summer 2011 for AS Roma.

• Born in Haarlem, he joined Ajax at 15 and made his league debut on 18 August 2002 – a month before his 20th birthday – in a 3-1 home win against FC Utrecht.

• One of four goalkeepers used by Ajax in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League, he made just ten appearances in the 2003/04 Eredivisie title-winning campaign before eventually establishing himself as first choice under Danny Blind in 2005/06.

• Won the Dutch Cup in 2006, 2007 and 2010, starting every final, and was named Ajax player of the year in 2008.

• Made his debut for the Netherlands on 3 September 2004 against Liechtenstein, a 3-0 win, but served as understudy to Ajax old boy Van der Sar for several years, including at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2008.

• Came to prominence internationally at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, starting all seven matches and conceding six goals as the Netherlands finished runners-up to Spain.

• Severed his ties with Ajax when he signed a four-year deal with Roma, who paid around €6.3m for his services, in August 2011.
