England's only goalscorer at the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship – where he struck against Spain and the Czech Republic – Danny Welbeck has broken into the senior side, his cause helped by a rewarding 2011/12 season with home-town club Manchester United FC following a loan spell at Sunderland AFC.
• A product of the Manchester United academy, Welbeck found the net on his Premier League debut for the Red Devils, a 5-0 victory against Stoke City FC in November 2009.
• A few months earlier he scored twice during England's run to the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final, which they lost 2-0 to hosts Ukraine; also suffered disappointment in 2007 against Spain in the U17 showpiece.
• Following a month with Preston North End FC in the second half of the 2009/10 season, he joined Sunderland on loan for the 2010/11 campaign, scoring his first goal for the club in a memorable 3-0 triumph at Chelsea FC.
• Made his senior international debut as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Ghana − his parents' country of birth − at Wembley in March 2011.
