Jakub Wawrzyniak

Jakub Wawrzyniak

A left-back who can also operate in the centre of defence, Jakub Wawrzyniak has been a Polish international since December 2006, making one appearance at UEFA EURO 2008. He has been a reliable servant to Legia Warszawa, winning the Polish Cup three times and reaching the UEFA Cup round of 32 in 2011/12.

• Tried his luck with a number of clubs at youth level before making his debut in Poland's Ekstraklasa with Świt Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki in 2003/04.

• Dropped down a division to join RTS Widzew Łódź; denied promotion in his first season after a play-off defeat by MKS Odra Wodzisław Śląski but finished top of the pile 12 months later to rejoin the elite.

• During an impressive 2006/07 season with Widzew he earned his first two caps for Poland – in friendlies against the United Arab Emirates and Estonia – and subsequently landed a lucrative transfer to Legia.

• Finished in second place behind Wisła Kraków in the 2007/08 Ekstraklasa but beat the champions on penalties in the Polish Cup final after a 0-0 draw, converting the decisive penalty for Legia in the shoot-out; had a short spell at Panathinaikos FC the following season before returning to Legia.

• Played in Poland's 1-0 defeat by Croatia at UEFA EURO 2008 but overlooked for two years before returning with eight successive starts for Franciszek Smuda's team in 2011.

• Won back-to-back Polish Cups with Legia in 2011 and 2012 (beating KKS Lech Poznań and Ruch Chorzów respectively) and made seven appearances, scoring one goal, in the club's 2011/12 UEFA Europa League run.
