Thomas Sørensen

The first-choice goalkeeper for Denmark throughout Morten Olsen's long reign as coach, Thomas Sørensen began the final countdown to UEFA EURO 2012 – and his fifth major tournament – by collecting his 100th cap. He has spent virtually his entire career in England, making over 350 Premier League appearances.

• Joined Odense BK as a youth but was deputy to veteran Danish international Lars Høgh and played no first-team games; had a loan spell with Vejle BK that was curtailed by injury but starred on a subsequent loan to second-tier FC Svendborg.

• Signed by Sunderland AFC in summer 1998 as a relative unknown but hit the ground running on Wearside, missing just one game as Peter Reid's side won promotion to the Premier League; went on to prove his worth over the next four seasons, accumulating 126 top-flight starts, before the club were relegated and he moved to Aston Villa FC.

• By the time of his move to Villa, in summer 2003, he was firmly installed as Denmark's No1, making his major tournament debut at the 2002 FIFA World Cup having been an unused squad member – as Peter Schmeichel's deputy – at UEFA EURO 2000; also made all four starts at UEFA EURO 2004 as Denmark reached the quarter-finals and another three at the 2010 World Cup.

• Spent four seasons as Villa's first choice, amassing 139 Premier League outings, but was completely inactive in his fifth, which prompted a summer 2008 transfer to Stoke City FC.

• Unchallenged as Stoke's regular keeper for two terms until he was deposed by Asmir Begović in the 2010/11 campaign; however, he started all of the team's FA Cup matches as they reached the final, but a 1-0 defeat at Wembley by Manchester City FC left him still awaiting the first major trophy of his career.

• He did, however, finally make his debut in UEFA club competition in 2011/12, in a UEFA Europa League play-off versus FC Thun; six months later, in a friendly against Russia, he won his 100th cap for Denmark.
