winner 2011

• Made low-key start to his career with Uruguayan outfit Miramar before joining Argentinian top-flight club Quilmes in 2005.

• Left Quilmes after their relegation in 2007 and made a spectacular impact at Argentinos Jrs, scoring seven goals in the 2007/08 Apertura championship (including a hat-trick against CA Newell's Old Boys) and another four in Clausura.

• Recruited by Romanian champions CFR in summer 2008, he became a stalwart in the team despite a succession of coach changes, making 29 Liga I appearances and six in the UEFA Champions League; won the Romanian Cup but only a substitute in the final (3-0 v FC Timişoara).

• Made his Uruguay debut in November 2008 in a goalless draw with France and scored on his next outing, a 3-2 defeat of Libya in Tripoli; made five appearances as the Celeste finished fourth at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

• Moved to Porto on a five-year contract in summer 2009, replacing Olympique Lyonnais-bound Aly Cissokho at left-back − soon established himself as a regular, winning the Liga title, Portuguese Cup and UEFA Europa League in 2011.

• Helped Uruguay to glory at the 2011 Copa América with two goals in five appearances in Argentina.
