A gifted young goalkeeper who has represented Ukraine at various age levels, Maxim Koval joined FC Dynamo Kyiv in 2010 as the understudy to Olexandr Shovkovskiy. The latter's unavailability for UEFA EURO 2012 through injury offers the teenager a chance to shine on the big stage this summer.
• Launched his career with home-town club FC Metalurh Zaporizhya, becoming the club's first-choice keeper in the Ukrainian Premier League at just 16 years of age.
• Made 19 top-flight starts for Zaporizhya in his debut campaign, during which he also established himself at international youth level; his vast potential earned him a dream move to Dynamo in August 2010.
• Stood in several times for the injured Shovkovskiy during the 2010/11 campaign, making his European debut in a UEFA Champions League play-off against AFC Ajax and accumulating 12 domestic league starts.
• Called into the senior national squad by returning Ukraine head coach Oleh Blokhin in June 2011 but did not make it on to the field of play.
• Relatively inactive in 2011/12, making just one further European appearance – in a 3-3 draw against Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC – but did enough to earn provisional UEFA EURO 2012 call-up despite still being uncapped.
