A winger-cum-striker still finding his feet in the Bundesliga following a 2010 transfer from Danish second-tier outfit Akademisk Boldklubb to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Nicolai Jørgensen represented Denmark several times at youth level before winning his first couple of senior caps in November 2011.

• Born in the Copenhagen suburb of Ballerup, he joined Brøndby IF as a schoolboy before switching to AB, where he gained experience in the Danish second division.

• Scored six goals in 24 appearances for AB in 2009/10, during which he also scored prolifically for the Danish Under-19 side.

• Bought by Leverkusen in summer 2010, he was used sparingly in the Bundesliga but appeared regularly in the club's run to the last 16 of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League, starting six matches but failing to score.

• Appeared for Denmark at the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Belarus.

• Underused at Leverkusen, he was farmed out to 1. FC Kaiserslautern on an 18-month loan in January 2012 with a view to boosting his chances of making Denmark's UEFA European Championship squad.
