• Born in the Brazilian city of Recife, Walter joined Internacional from his youth team EC São José in 2006 and graduated to the first team two years later.

• Promising form for Internacional earned him international recognition at Under-20 level and he was the joint top scorer at the 2009 South American Youth Championship in Venezuela, finding the net five times in Brazil's triumphant campaign.

• Suffered serious injury in May 2009 while playing for Internacional's junior side and was not reintegrated into the first team until almost a year later.

• Signed a five-year contract with Porto in August 2010 and, though not a regular, scored an impressive five goals in 13 appearances in the Dragons' title-winning campaign.

• An unused substitute in the 2011 UEFA Europa League final, he played four times in the group stage and once in the play-offs en route to the Dublin showpiece.
