• A relative latecomer to the professional ranks, Schmitz played regional league football for Sprockhövel and Bochum before leaving the latter for Schalke in 2009.
• Made his Bundesliga debut on 18 September 2009 in a 2-1 home defeat against VfL Wolfsburg; claimed a regular place in Felix Magath's side as a midfielder before switching to left-back.
• Scored two Bundesliga goals in his debut season – both at home, against Hamburger SV (3-3) and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2-0).
• Made his first European appearance as a substitute on Matchday 1 of the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League against Olympique Lyonnais (0-1); started four subsequent fixtures in the group stage, all of which resulted in victory.
