• Joined Santos as an apprentice in 2003 and made his first-team debut in March 2009, aged 17 – ended the season with ten goals in 33 league appearances. His stock rose considerably in 2010 after he scored five times in an 8-1 Brazilian Cup win against Guarani FC.

• After starring at Under-17 and U20 levels, Neymar received full international recognition in August 2010, marking his debut against the United States with a headed goal. He went on to top the scoring charts at the 2011 South American Youth Championsip, plundering nine goals.

• Produced a man-of-the-match display in Santos' 2011 Copa Libertadores final triumph against CA Peñarol, their first since 1963. Neymar enhanced his reputation that December by netting in a 3-1 FIFA Club World Cup semi-final defeat of Kashiwa Reysol but was helpless to prevent his team succumbing 4-0 in the final to eventual employers Barcelona.

• Capped a memorable domestic campaign by winning the 2011 South American footballer of the year award by a record margin. A virtuoso effort against CR Flamengo also earned him the FIFA Puskás Award for the "most beautiful goal" of the year.

• Played his final match for Santos, a goalless draw with Flamengo, on 26 May 2013 – the same day his move to Barcelona, with whom he signed a five-year deal, was announced. He then dazzled in Brazil's FIFA Confederations Cup victory on home soil, scoring arguably the goal of the tournament, a stunning half-volley against Mexico, and finding the net with a thumping left-footed finish in a 3-0 defeat of final opponents Spain.
