Julien Escudé

A calm, composed central defender who can also play in either full-back role, Julien Escudé became a French international after joining Sevilla FC in 2006. Twice a UEFA Cup winner with the Andalusian club, he helped his country qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

• Born in Chartres, he played youth football at Olympique Lyonnais before launching his professional career with AS Cannes.

• Joined Stade Rennais FC in 1999 and made 111 appearances in the French top flight over the next four seasons, becoming a French Under-21 international in the process.

• Became the first Frenchman to play for AFC Ajax when he joined the Amsterdam club in 2003; won Eredivisie title in his first season, was appointed as club captain towards the end of second but lost his place early in the third campaign and was sold to Sevilla in January 2006.

• Won UEFA Cup within four months of joining Sevilla, starting every game from quarter-finals onwards; also won 2006 UEFA Super Cup, 2007 Copa del Rey and played prominent role in helping club to successful UEFA Cup defence but missed final in Glasgow through suspension.

• Won first cap for France in October 2006 but not included in UEFA EURO 2008 squad; broke nose early in second leg of 2010 FIFA World Cup play-off against the Republic of Ireland after clash with team-mate Patrice Evra and had to be substituted.
