• A UEFA Champions League finalist and Premier League runner-up in 2007/08, he was injured and ousted by Alex in 2008/09 but recovered his place alongside John Terry in Carlo Ancelotti's title-winning 2009/10 squad.

• Was reunited with Mourinho when he left Chelsea for Madrid for a reported €8m in August 2010; scored his first goal for the Merengues on his second start, the winner in a 1-0 victory against CA Osasuna on 11 September 2010.

• Left Madrid when his contract expired following the 2012/13 season, moving to newly promoted Ligue 1 club AS Monaco FC.
