• Broke into the Porto side – after a number of loan spells with minor clubs − midway through the 2002/03 season that ended with treble success of Liga, Portuguese Cup and UEFA Cup.
• On the field for every minute of Porto's 2003/04 UEFA Champions League win and voted UEFA Club Defender of the Year.
• Thrown into the deep end as Fernando Couto's replacement for Portugal's second game at UEFA EURO 2004, against Russia; started every game thereafter − including the final − winning a place in the UEFA All-Star Squad, and was also a regular in Luiz Felipe Scolari's side at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2008.
• Followed José Mourinho from Porto to Chelsea in 2004, winning two further league titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup (though injured for the Wembley final) under his mentor.
• A UEFA Champions League finalist and Premier League runner-up in 2007/08, he was injured and ousted by Alex in 2008/09 but recovered his place alongside John Terry in Carlo Ancelotti's title-winning 2009/10 squad.
• Was reunited with Mourinho when he left Chelsea for Madrid for a reported €8m in August 2010; scored his first goal for the Merengues on his second start, the winner in a 1-0 victory against CA Osasuna on 11 September 2010.
