• Aged 17, he left local club Aalesund after just one season to launch his career abroad at Monaco, winning the 1999/00 French title.

• Moved to Liverpool in 2001 and made a favourable early impression, winning the FA Charity (now Community) Shield against Manchester United FC on his debut and also scoring in a 3-2 UEFA Super Cup victory against FC Bayern München.

• Won his first senior cap for Norway in January 2000, scored his first international goal the following month and was selected for the UEFA EURO 2000 squad, aged 19, though did not play; spent the subsequent decade as his country's regular left-back.

• Seven seasons at Anfield peaked with a UEFA Champions League triumph in 2005, to which he was a major contributor (though he missed his penalty in the final shoot-out against AC Milan); he also won two domestic cups, scoring the decisive spot kick in the 2006 FA Cup final shoot-out against West Ham United FC, and accumulated 234 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals.

• Left Liverpool for Roma in 2008 and played a prominent part in helping the Giallorossi to second place in both Serie A and the Coppa Italia in 2009/10. Linked up with his brother, Bjørn Helge, for the first time at club level when he signed a three-year deal with Fulham in July 2011.

• Earned his 100th cap for Norway on 12 November 2011 in a 4-1 defeat by Wales in a Cardiff friendly.
