Clubs: 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Borussia Dortmund

• Weidenfeller joined Kaiserslauern at 16 and graduated through their youth and amateur sides to the first team; made an impressive European club competition debut against PSV Eindhoven (1-0) in the quarter-final first leg of the 2000/01 UEFA Cup.

• Made waves for Germany at the 1997 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Egypt, where he was honoured as the tournament's best goalkeeper.

• Left Kaiserslautern for Bundesliga champions Dortmund on a free transfer in 2002, becoming understudy to Jens Lehmann; took over as No1 a year later after Lehmann's move to Arsenal FC.

• Took time to establish himself as a worthy successor to the German international, finally making the position his own in the 2006/07 season, during which he started all 34 Bundesliga matches – despite playing under three different coaches (Bert van Marwijk, Jürgen Röber and Thomas Doll).

• Returned to European competition after a seven-year wait in 2010/11, playing all six group games in the UEFA Europa League, and also starred in Dortmund's surge towards the German title, which they retained the following season. 

• Ever-present in the Schwarzgelben's run to the 2013 UEFA Champions League final, producing several superb performances along the way, Weidenfeller signed a two-year contract extension with the club three weeks before the Wembley showpiece.
