Djibril Cissé

A French international for a decade but yet to be involved at a UEFA European Championship final tournament, Djibril Cissé will be hoping for that belated opportunity this summer. The flamboyant striker enjoyed two prolific seasons with Panathinaikos FC before joining S.S. Lazio in summer 2011, but stayed in Rome for just six months before returning to England and Queens Park Rangers FC.

• Came up through the youth ranks at AJ Auxerre, where he burst on to the scene as a 20-year-old, registering 22 goals in 29 Ligue 1 starts in 2001/02.

• Won the Coupe de France with the Burgundy club the following season before topping the Ligue 1 goal charts outright − with 26 in 38 matches − in 2003/04 and earning a transfer to Liverpool FC.

• Received his first cap for France on the eve of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, in which he appeared as a substitute in all three games; more involved a year later as France captured the FIFA Confederations Cup but missed out on UEFA EURO 2004 through suspension.

• Won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FA Cup with Liverpool – finding the net in the last two of those finals − despite a two-year spell handicapped by a horrific leg break; moved to Olympique de Marseille on loan in 2006 before making the transfer permanent a year later and scoring 16 Ligue 1 goals, only to be denied a UEFA EURO 2008 place by the late emergence of Bafétimbi Gomis.

• Returned to England on a season-long loan with Sunderland AFC before moving to Greece, where he spearheaded Panathinaikos's domestic double triumph, finishing as the Super League's 23-goal runaway top marksman in 2009/10; retained the top-scorers' prize the following campaign with 20 goals before departing for Lazio.

• Success in Greece earned him a surprise call-up to the 2010 World Cup − his first major tournament for seven years − where he made one appearance, in the final group game against South Africa.

• Following a return of one goal in 18 Serie A games he moved to QPR, for whom he scored 12 minutes into his debut − a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa FC − but was sent off in two of his next four appearances.
