A tough, aggressive right-back, Marcin Wasilewski has revived his career, both at club and international level, following a horrific leg injury that kept him out of the game for the best part of a year and a half. The long-serving Poland defender is a cult hero at RSC Anderlecht, with whom he has won two Belgian league titles.

• Started his career in the Polish second division with local club Hutnik Kraków before joining top-flight WKS Słąsk Wroclaw in 2000.

• Relegated with Słąsk in 2002, he moved on to Wisła Płock, with whom he had a brief taste of UEFA Cup football and earned elevation to the Polish national squad, making his debut against Denmark in a November 2002 friendly in Copenhagen.

• Made no appearances in the 2006 FIFA World Cup (qualifying or finals), but his impressive form at KS Amica Wronki/KKS Lech Poznań earned him a regular place in Leo Beenhakker's team, and he went on to make 11 UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying outings and three more at the finals.

• Moved to Anderlecht in January 2007 and won the Belgian title four months later, scoring in each of his first two league games; absent for most of the club's 2009/10 title-winning season following his career-threatening leg break against rivals R. Standard de Liège that August and did not return in earnest until November 2010.

• Recalled by Poland after a two-year absence for a September 2011 friendly against Mexico and started four of the team's next five matches in the countdown to UEFA EURO 2012; made 28 appearances, scoring three times, as Anderlecht won the 2011/12 Belgian title.
