Hugo Viana

A strong 2011/12 season with SC Braga earned Hugo Viana a return to the Portuguese national team set-up after a five-year absence. The gifted left-footed midfield strategist received a late call-up to Paulo Bento's UEFA EURO 2012 party as a replacement for the injured Carlos Martins.

• A product of the Sporting youth academy, Viana enjoyed a phenomenal debut season for the senior side in 2001/02, helping the Lisbon club to a domestic league and cup double.

• Represented Portugal in the 2002 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Switzerland and received a late call-up for the FIFA World Cup that summer, having made his senior international debut in a friendly against Angola in November 2001; also represented his country at the 2006 World Cup, making two substitute appearances as the Selecção finished fourth.

• Joined Newcastle in summer 2002 aged 19 for €12m but struggled to adapt to the Premier League and returned on loan to Sporting in 2004/05, where he rediscovered his form and helped the Lions reach the UEFA Cup final.

• Moved to Valencia in 2005 but again had difficulties in making a positive impression abroad; a loan spell at Osasuna in 2007/08 was ruined by injury but he revived his career two seasons later during a season-long loan back in Portugal with Braga, playing a starring role as the northern club challenged Benfica for title, eventually finishing runners-up.

• Signed full time for Braga before the 2010/11 campaign, during which he again excelled, particularly in the UEFA Europa League, where he was ever-present (from the round of 32 onwards) as the Minho outfit reached the final in Dublin; helped the club to third in the league in 2011/12 and a UEFA Champions League play-off place.
