An experienced midfielder who represented his country at the Athens Olympics in 2004 but did not become a senior international until just before his 28th birthday, Giorgos Fotakis is also unusual among his Greek international peers in that he has never played for one of the big three clubs from the capital.

• Born in Kalamata, he started out with PAOK FC but had to drop down a division in order to experience regular first-team football, which he did at Egaleo FC, helping the provincial club win promotion to the top flight in 2001.

• Remained with Egaleo for the next four and a half years, making 113 appearances in the Greek Super League, scoring nine goals and also representing the club in the UEFA Cup; a Greek Under-21 international, he started all three matches at the Athens Olympics.

• A move to Scottish team Kilmarnock FC in January 2006 proved ill-judged and he returned to Greece in the summer, joining Larissa and winning his first major silverware in the shape of the Greek Cup.

• Featured in the UEFA Cup again the following season, scoring his first European goal in Larissa's 3-2 defeat by an FC Zenit St Petersburg side that would go on to win the trophy.

• Left Larissa in summer 2009 for PAOK and made his senior international debut in October of that year in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg; he made only two UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying appearances, both as a substitute, but scored a vital equalising goal in Georgia in the final fixture.
