Roman Hubník

Roman Hubník

An increasingly important player for the Czech Republic, Roman Hubník started nine of the team's ten UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers, scoring a precious winning goal at home to Scotland. A strong and assertive central defender, he has had a chequered club career since breaking through with SK Sigma Olomouc.

• Born in Vsetin, close to the Slovakian border, he came through the youth ranks at Olomouc, making his debut in November 2002, aged 18, in the Czech 1. Liga

• Helped Olomouc to a third-place finish in 2003/04, which brought a European debut – in the UEFA Cup – the following season; completed 100 top-flight appearances for the club before joining FC Moskva in January 2007.

• Unable to command a regular place in the side, he returned home after two years, joining AC Sparta Praha, with whom he revived his career and graduated from Czech Under-21 duties to the senior national side, making his debut under caretaker coach František Straka against Malta on 5 June 2009.

• Halfway towards helping Sparta win the 2009/10 Czech title he left for Germany, joining Hertha BSC Berlin, but was relegated from the Bundesliga a few months later.

• A prominent figure in the club's immediate promotion under coach Markus Babbel, he suffered disappointment in the lead up to UEFA EURO 2012 when Hertha lost their top-flight status following defeat by Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga relegation-promotion play-off.

• A scorer on his second international appearance – an August 2009 friendly against Belgium – he played in three 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers before cementing his place in Michal Bílek's team en route to UEFA EURO 2012.
