• Born in Patagonia to a German father and an Italian mother, Heinze spent only a short time in his native Argentina before moving to Spain and joining Valladolid; had a spell on loan at Sporting before establishing himself in the Liga.
• Moved to Paris in 2001 and spent three years with PSG, enjoying his first experience of UEFA club football and winning the Coupe de France, before signing with United for €10.4m and, after scoring on his debut, becoming the first-choice left-back in Sir Alex Ferguson's team; missed most of his second season at Old Trafford with torn knee ligaments.
• A 2004 Olympic gold medalist and twice Copa América runner-up with Argentina, he also represented his country at the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup finals, scoring the Albiceleste's first goal at the latter tournament, in a 1-0 win against Nigeria.
• Set to leave United for Liverpool FC after winning the Premier League in 2006/07 but the bid was rejected and he joined Madrid instead; won the Liga title in his first season at the Santiago Bernabéu but was on the move again in 2009 when he returned to France after five years away to join Marseille.
• Won his third European national title in four seasons as he helped OM to Ligue 1 glory in 2009/10, making 27 appearances and scoring four goals – his best return in a league campaign; also on target twice in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League, adding another goal – in a 7-0 win away to MŠK Žilina – during the 2010/11 group stage.
