Edson Braafheid

A former European champion at Under-21 level, Surinam-born left-back Edson Braafheid returned to the Dutch national team in the autumn of 2011 having overcome a disappointing spell at FC Bayern München and revived his career with another German Bundesliga side, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

• Started out with FC Utrecht in 2003/04 and remained with the club until January 2007, chalking up 81 Eredivisie appearances and scoring two goals – both in 2005/06, against Roda JC and RKC Waalwijk.

• Recruited by FC Twente on a free transfer, he was converted by Fred Rutten from a left-back to a central defender but was subsequently restored to his former role by Rutten's successor, Steve McClaren.

• Helped Twente to a runners-up spot in both the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup in 2008/09; the cup final, lost on penalties to SC Heerenveen, proved to be his final game for the Enschede club as he signed a four-year contract with Bayern a few weeks later.

• A member of the Jong Oranje team that won the 2006 U21 European title in Portugal, he was given his senior international debut in a 1-1 draw with Tunisia in February 2009; made one appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, as an extra-time substitute for the retiring Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the final against Spain.

• Featured sporadically for Bayern in the first half of the 2009/10 campaign before he joined Celtic on loan for six months; transferred to Hoffenheim in January 2011 after little first-team action upon his return but was sent off on his debut, a 3-2 victory against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
