Bruno Alves

Now resident in Russia with FC Zenit St Petersburg, former FC Porto centre-back Bruno Alves has established himself as the senior figure in the Portugal defence and started eight of the team's UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers, including the two play-off matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

• Porto-born, his career got off to a hesitant start with loan spells at FC Farense, Vitória SC and, for the whole of the 2004/05 season, AEK Athens FC; rejoined Porto in 2005 but did not figure prominently until the arrival of coach Jesualdo Ferreira in 2006.

• Made just one appearance at UEFA EURO 2008 but became a firm fixture during 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying, scoring crucial goals against Albania and, in the play-offs, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

• A key man in Porto's three successive title wins from 2006/07 to 2008/09, missing just five Liga games.

• Scored a career-best tally of five goals in Porto's 2008/09 title success − a tally he matched the following campaign − including a championship-clinching winner against CD Nacional; also voted Liga player of the season, lifted the Portuguese Cup and appointed captain after the departure of Lucho to Olympique de Marseille.

• Moved to Zenit for €22m following four outings at the 2010 World Cup and appeared 14 times in the Premier-Liga as the Blue and Whites won the title, an honour which they retained in the following 18-month transitional Russian campaign.

• Helped Zenit reach the UEFA Champions League round of 16 for the first time in 2011/12, the last of his three group stage appearances coming as a late substitute on matchday six in a decisive goalless draw with Porto at the Estádio do Dragão.
