Ireneusz Jeleń

A consistent goalscorer throughout his career, both with Wisła Płock in his homeland and French club AJ Auxerre, Ireneusz Jeleń is a dynamic, pacy front man whose style can be adapted to playing either as an out-and-out striker or on the wing. His experience could prove invaluable for Poland at UEFA EURO 2012.

• Started his career at third division level with Piast Cieszyn and Beskid Skoczów before joining Wisła Płock in 2002; adapted well to life in the top flight, scoring eight league goals in his debut campaign plus the winner away to Wisła Kraków in the first leg of the Polish Cup final (the 1-0 win was followed by a 3-0 defeat in the return).

• Struck 18 league goals in 26 matches in 2003/04 to become the Ekstraklasa's second highest scorer and added two goals on his first European start, a UEFA Cup qualifier against FK Ventspils, plus another on his second international appearance – a 3-1 win over Lithuania in Malta on 14 December 2003, three days after his debut.

• Ended his Wisła career with 45 goals in exactly 100 Ekstraklasa games and won the Polish Cup, scoring twice in the first leg of the final against Zagłębie Lubin, before appearing at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and leaving his homeland to join Auxerre.

• Started well in France, scoring ten Ligue 1 goals and another five in Europe in his first season for Auxerre; registered 14 in both the 2008/09 and 2009/10 league campaigns, helping the Burgundy club to finish third in the latter.

• Scored the winner against FC Zenit St Petersburg to qualify Auxerre for the group stage of the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League and was on target for Poland ten days later in friendly against UEFA EURO 2012 co-hosts Ukraine in Lodz (1-1).

• Left Auxerre after five years to join French champions LOSC Lille Métropole in summer 2011 but struggled to gain a regular place in Rudi Garcia's side and started just one game in the UEFA Champions League – away to FC Internazionale Milano – as Les Dogues finished bottom of their group, and grabbed third place in Ligue 1.
