Ruben Amorim

A midfield all-rounder who has been affiliated to SL Benfica since 2008, Ruben Amorim received a surprise late call-up to the Portugal squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, making his debut at the finals. He spent the second half of the 2011/12 season on loan at SC Braga.

• Born in Lisbon, he had a two-year spell in Benfica's youth academy before switching allegiance to CF Os Belenenses, where he turned professional and made his Liga debut on 14 December 2003 in a 2-0 win against FC Alverca.

• Established himself at Belenenses over the next few seasons and played alongside the likes of Nani, Miguel Veloso and Hugo Almeida at the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in the Netherlands.

• Ended his contract with Belenenses in 2008 after 96 Liga appearances and returned to Benfica on a four-year deal.

• Helped the Eagles end a five-year trophy drought by winning the Liga and Portuguese League Cup in 2009/10 and was rewarded by being drafted into Portugal's World Cup squad as an eleventh-hour replacement for the injured Nani; made his debut as a late substitute in the opening game against the Ivory Coast.

• Missed the second half of the 2010/11 season after undergoing knee surgery but returned to action in 2011/12 and was recalled to Portugal squad, though not the team, for the last few UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers.
