• Born in Sao Paulo, Edu had a relatively discreet start to his career, playing for several Brazilian clubs before leaving for Germany in August 2003.

• Arrived at Bochum as a defender but was transformed into a striker by coach Peter Neururer; remained in that role after Bochum's relegation in 2005 and scored 12 goals the following season to help the club return to the elite as 2. Bundesliga champions.

• Left Bochum for Mainz in August 2006 but lasted only half a season before departing for Korea Republic, where he became an impressive performer for Suwon Bluewings, winning the K-League title in 2008 – after scoring in the play-off win against FC Seoul – and the Korean Cup in 2009.

• Returned for a second spell in Germany when he joined Schalke on a three-and-a-half year contract in January 2010.

• Scored two Bundesliga goals in spring 2010 but relegated to the role of deputy following the arrival of Raúl González and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and made only three substitute appearances in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage.
