Adrian Mierzejewski

Adrian Mierzejewski

Introduced to top-flight football at an early age, Adrian Mierzejewski is a relatively late developer at international level but the midfield schemer is tipped to be one of Poland's leading lights at UEFA EURO 2012. The Ekstraklasa's player of the year in 2010/11, he subsequently left KSP Polonia Warszawa for Trabzonspor AŞ.

• Began with home-town club Stomil Olsztyn before moving into Poland's top division with Wisła Płock and making his Ekstraklasa bow as a 17-year-old on 15 May 2004.

• A fourth-placed finish with Wisła in 2004/05 earned him a European debut the following season in a UEFA Cup qualifier against Grasshopper-Club; helped his club win the Polish Cup in 2006 but did not appear in either leg of the final.

• Joined Zagłębie Sosnowiec on loan in 2006/07 but while he helped them win promotion, Wisła were relegated and he spent the next two seasons in the second division before leaving for the capital to join Polonia in January 2009.

• An immediate hit with Polonia, he became the team's captain in 2010/11 and scored a career-best total of seven goals in 27 games, earning not only the Ekstraklasa's top player award but claiming a regular berth in the Polish national team following a lengthy spell playing for the country's various age-group selections.

• Scored his first international goal to help Poland defeat Argentina 2-1 in a prestigious Warsaw friendly on 5 June 2011; eleven days later he left Polonia for Trabzonspor and had the bonus of representing his new club in the UEFA Champions League the following autumn as the Black Sea outfit replaced Fenerbahçe SK in the competition.
