History
• Liverpool came to being after city mayor John Houlding bought Anfield following the departure of Everton to Goodison Park. Higher Walton were beaten 8-0 in the club's first official match on 3 September that year, while promotion to the top flight followed in 1894 and a first title in 1901.

• The appointment of Huddersfield Town FC manager Bill Shankly on 1 December 1959 changed the history of the club forever. The Reds won three league championships, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup under the Scot before his surprise retirement after the 1974 FA Cup final.

• His replacement, Bob Paisley, would emerge as the club's most successful manager, his haul of 17 trophies including a UEFA Cup in 1976 and European Champion Clubs' Cup triumphs in 1977 (3-1 v VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, Rome), 1978 (1-0 v Club Brugge KV, London) and 1981 (1-0 v Real Madrid CF, Paris).

• Liverpool won a fourth European Cup under Joe Fagan, defeating AS Roma on penalties in 1984. In the following years the club had to cope with the tragic events of Heysel in 1985 and the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

• The Merseysiders claimed their 18th and last English crown in 1990, although the treble triumph of 2001 (League, FA and UEFA Cups) masterminded by the club's first foreign manager, Gérard Houllier, revived memories of the glory years. Then there was the incredible UEFA Champions League final victory in 2005, when Rafael Benítez's team fought back from 3-0 down at half-time to defeat AC Milan in Istanbul.
