History
• Founded in 1927 by the merger of SS Alba Audace, Fortitudo Pro Roma SGS and Roman FC, Associazione Sportiva Roma were initially coached by Englishman William Garbutt, who led them to instant success in the CONI Cup, the predecessor of the Coppa Italia.

• The Giallorossi had to wait until 1942 to win their first Italian championship thanks in no small part to 18 goals from Amadeo Amedei, nicknamed 'il Fornaretto' (the Little Baker) because he delivered bread when he was a child. Roma became the first team from outside northern Italy to claim the title.

• Roma failed to build on that success and were relegated for the first, and so far only, time in 1951. They were soon back, and with the likes of Pedro Manfredini, Francisco Lojacono, Antonio Valentin Angelillo, Arne Selmosson and Juan Alberto Schiaffino in their ranks the Rome club won the Coppa Italia in 1964 and 1969.

• The golden decade was the 1980s, however. With Brazilian Falcão in midfield marshalling a team including Bruno Conti, Francesco Graziani and Roberto Pruzzo, Roma won four Coppa Italia titles in seven seasons. In 1983 they also claimed the Scudetto and the following year they lost the European Champion Clubs' Cup final on penalties against Liverpool FC at the Stadio Olimpico.

• After a seventh Coppa Italia success in 1991, Roma started the 21st century in style, taking their third Serie A title in 2001 spearheaded by the formidable strike trio of Gabriel Batistuta, Vincenzo Montella and Francesco Totti under the guidance of former player, Fabio Capello. Luciano Spalletti led the Giallorossi to back-to-back Coppa Italias in 2007 and 2008, the latter a record-equalling ninth success in the competition.
